I think this is a very important concept. What would you do with spending time with relatives you don’t really like?
I suggest this: “Spend time with those people who make you feel better when you are with them. Spend time with people who put a smile on your face when you think of them. Spend time with people who have qualities you aspire to have. Don’t spend time with negative, gossiping, hypocritical people. They will suck the life energy out of you.”
I know that last part seems a bit harsh, but it’s your life. You choose what you are going to do today. You can choose things that make you happy or things that make you miserable. It’s your choice!
In David Schwartz’s book, the “Magic Of Thinking Big,” he says that success and happiness in life depends on the people that you associate with. Make a conscious decision to only hang out with positive, happy people. If a negative conversation is going on, just get up and leave the table. They will eventually get it. You know what will happen? They will stop talking negatively around you.
You are giving up a day of your life today; spend it the way you feel you should. Be around the people you want to be around. Don’t let anyone EVER suck out your positive energy!
“Did You Know Where This Saying Came From…?”
Right Off The Bat
Meaning: Immediately or done in a hurry; without delay. Example: Right off the bat after waking up, I went into the restroom to brush my teeth because I had forgotten to do it prior to falling asleep.
Origin: The origins of this phrase are likely to be from baseball, where, after a successful hit, the batter will take immediate action and run to first base. The quick response that the batter takes seems to be where the expression gets its figurative meaning of ‘something being done without delay.’ From what we’ve found, this idiom goes back to at least the 1880’s. We were unable to find it in writing before then, but of course, it’s possible older citations exist and we missed them. Anyways, during the 1880s, this expression was used in newspapers both in relation to baseball, but also in the figurative sense of ‘doing something fast.’
An example of the former is found in the Albion New Era newspaper, 1883, where it says: “A person unused to it would net catch one ‘fly’ out of fi y, and as for stopping and holding a hot liner right o the bat, he might as well attempt to gather in a solid shot fired point blank from a Parrot gun.” The quote above is talking about baseball. This next quote, however, is an example of the saying being used with its figurative meaning. This example comes five years later in the Biddeford Journal, 1888: “Let me hear that kid use slang again, and I’ll give it to him right o the bat. I’ll wipe up the floor with him.”
Rolling With The Punches
Meaning: 1. Getting the bad end of a deal, or receiving the least desirable outcome from something. 2. A boxing term that means to position, or move one’s body or head in such a way so as to decrease the force of impact of the opponent’s incoming punches. 3. It can also mean to tolerate or ‘roll’ with the hardships one may unexpectedly run into.
Origin: This phrase is believed to originate with boxing, where ‘rolling with the punches’ was, and still is, a boxing term. The term is used to explain how boxers will o en angle themselves in certain ways to help lessen the impact of incoming blows. For instance, if an opponent throws a left punch, a boxer can ‘roll’ with it by moving his body and head backwards and to the right, so that way, even if the punch lands, it wouldn’t be quite as damaging as a full contact strike.
The earliest quote that we could find of this phrase is from the early 20th century. It was used in relation to boxing in a newspaper called the Boston Daily Globe, 1903, where a summary of a recent sparring match was given: “He repeated the blow a few seconds later and also clubbed Johnson on the cheek . . . Johnson allowed his head to roll with the punches and was not hurt. Johnson’s round.” While the phrase remains as a boxing term today, it has also developed a figurative meaning that’s used outside the context of boxing.
